Item Review: Deer Arrow Custom Apple Brooch

Yesterday my first ever purchase from Australian jewellery maker Deer Arrow arrived in the mail.  Unlike most retro jewellery shops, Deer Arrow has several customisable brooch options.  I decided to customise their popular “poison” apple brooch with the phrase “Pretty Deadly” – I like the juxtaposition of the words, and I like the fact that it has a double meaning, with “deadly” meaning “awesome” or “great” in Australian slang.  Deer Arrow suggest that you put no more than three words on your brooch, to maintain legibility.

Deer Arrow are currently running a giveaway competition on Instagram, and it was for this competition that I composed the following photographs, showcasing my new brooch.  The syringe in the photos is a vintage piece of medical paraphernalia gifted to me by a friend.

The apple brooch is made from a combination of resin and timber and is beautifully put together.  The red of the apple is glittered, and the timber phrase stands out against the shiny resin really well.  The clasp is the locking kind and it is securely fastened to the brooch with no looseness or wiggle.

The quality of this brooch is fantastic and I’ll definitely be purchasing more brooches from Deer Arrow in the future!  The custom poison apple brooch is AU$25, with postage just AU$5 within Australia, or free for purchases over AU$50.

Deer Arrow also has earrings, such as these icecream studs, and cardigan clips in its range.  Popular new releases include their ballerina brooch and Alice in Wonderland series.  Follow Deer Arrow on Instagram to keep up to date with release times for new stock.
