Item Review: Steady Clothing “Sophia” Top

Hello and welcome to my review of the Sophia top in black.SONY DSC

What: The Sophia top in black.  This top is made of a jersey-like fabric comprised of 74% polyester, 23% rayon and 3% spandex.SONY DSC

Where From?: By repro company Steady Clothing, the Sophia is available online at Stady Clothing’s US website in seven colourways, or at Aussie online shops such as Atomic Cherry, in a choice of black or red.  I purchased mine from Nambour store Pin Curls and Petticoats during yesterday’s Retro Rocks Nambour festival.SONY DSC

How Much?: US$39.99 on Steady Clothing’s website; AU$45 at Atomic Cherry; and mine was marked down from AU$49.99 to $28 on sale!

Sizes: The Sophia top is available in sizes Small to 3XL, with the small fitting a bust of 31 inches and a waist of 27 inches, and the 3XL fitting a bust of 42 inches and a waist of 37 inches.  Keep in mind though that this is a very stretchy top.  I am wearing a size 1XL, which fits a 39 inch bust and a 34 in
ch waist – a bit smaller than my measurements, and yet it fits comfortably and any bigger would be too big.SONY DSC

Wear: This is such a comfortable top!  Stretchy, soft and easy to slip over your head, it is an excellent basic for pairing with a wide variety of skirts and trousers.  Because it features an interesting neckline on a plain but well cut silhouette, it can easily be dressed up or down and does not compete and clash with the rest of your outfit, as fussy, detailed tops often do.  SONY DSC

The Sophia is long enough to sit to your hipbones, making it suitable to wear untucked with a pair of wide-legged pants or a pencil skirt.  Or you can do as I did, and tuck it into a mini skirt:  I paired my Sophia with the Mini Liesel cherry polka dot skirt from Collectif (to be reviewed soon).

The Sophia is produced in the following colourways: black, charcoal, purple, ivory, mint, red, and denim.  The block colours allow for a great range of outfits, as you can pair a top with a skirt or pants featuring a print with the same colour.  I’d purchase black, red and ivory first, as these colours lend themselves to a huge variety of pinup/retro outfits.  Because of the fabric, it may be a little warm in the middle of a Queensland summer, but the short cap sleeves and exposed throat means it can be worn for most of the warmer months.

I highly recommend this versatile top and am looking into purchasing other colourways in the future.

I’d be interested how that top goes in a couple of washes – I have three steady tops, all purchased three years ago, and after a couple of wears, had faded and pilled a lot – they looked like tatty old op shop tops. I haven’t worn them for ages – really disappointed. Hope the quality has improved.

That’s certainly something I’ll look out for, and if it is a problem still, I’ll be sure to make a note of it on the review post. Thanks for your feedback!
